Artist of the Week

By: Danielle Miklos

Common has been perfecting his music since the early nineties. He grew up in a time when hip-hop was making something of itself. When he stopped working with famous MC’s such as Ice Cube, he also dropped his original style and adapted a new flow. Even if it meant he had to seclude himself from the modern mass record sales, he was never afraid to break away from the conventional hip-hop.

“I am never afraid to march to my own beat, establishing myself as a critically thinking, conscientious-raising lyrical kingpin, while putting Chicago rap on the map,” says Common.

In almost fifteen years, Common has written seven albums and has collaborated with some of hip-hop’s top talent such as Pharrell, Kanye West, Mary J. Blige, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, and even John Legend. He has even worked with his own father, Lonnie Lynn, a former ABA basketball player. Common’s friends-as-family ties run so deep that he actually moved to LA to live with the late J Dilla, a record producer, MC, and one of Common’s best friends, to help him through his last days before dying of lupus.

Common has lately been getting involved with the politic aspects of life and has fearlessly spoken about everything; from abortion, alcohol abuse, animal rights, Afrocentricity to AIDS. He readily changed his music style more than some MC’s have changed over a lifetime, and as a solo artist has created a form of hip-hop that comes from a much higher power-

“Where pimpin’ is less important than inner peace, love is more important than livin’ large and spirituality can conquer the street,” explains Common.

Be sure to catch him on MTV all week in revealing one-on-one interviews, rapping in Brooklyn , and even performing live. Watch him discuss the hottest dinner party ever along with Alicia Keyes and Kerry Washington. You can even create your own version of Common’s newest hit “Drivin’ Me Wild” video using the MTV Video Remixer. Basically all that is left to say is that this week’s artist of the week is anything but common.
